King Ferry, N.Y. — October 9 — Members of the King Ferry Fire Department participated in a Fire Prevention Week event at Emily Howland Elementary School on Friday, October 9, 2026. The activity involved collaboration with firefighters from other departments serving the Southern Cayuga Central School District.

Firefighters Mac Lamoreau and Chief Scott Shaw from the King Ferry Fire Department attended the school visit. During the session, students were introduced to the equipment found on the department’s Rescue 1 apparatus and its role in emergency situations.

The presentation aimed to educate students about the tools and efforts of local emergency responders. It also provided a chance for firefighters to share real-world safety tips and strengthen their ties with the communities they support.

Fire Prevention Week took place from October 4 to October 10, 2026. The National Fire Protection Association chose the theme “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” which highlighted the importance of reducing fire hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries in electronic devices such as phones, tablets, toys, and other gadgets.

The safety advice emphasized the use of chargers approved by the manufacturer, charging devices on sturdy, flat surfaces, and unplugging them once fully charged. Students and families were encouraged to adopt these safe charging habits at home.

A photograph of the visit was shared with the public, but student identities were carefully protected through cropping, ensuring the privacy of students during school outreach efforts.
