Cayuga, N.Y. — October 9 — Members of the Cayuga Fire Department took part in the annual fire prevention presentation at A.J.Smith Elementary School on Friday, October 9, 2026, along with firefighters from the Union Springs, Aurelius, and Fleming fire departments.

This yearly school visit allowed emergency responders to engage with students and reinforce essential fire safety practices.

These presentations help children learn how to identify potential hazards, react during a fire emergency, and make safer decisions at home and in school.

The departments involved represented various local fire service agencies that serve communities throughout Cayuga County.

Their participation also emphasized the importance of working together between neighboring departments to enhance public safety and community education.Cayuga County Fire Services considers communication, cooperation, and collaboration among local fire departments to be essential components of its mission.

The event occurred during the National Fire Protection Association’s 2026 Fire Prevention Week, which took place from October 4 to 10.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focused on safe charging practices for electronic devices that use lithium-ion batteries. The campaign encouraged individuals to use approved chargers, charge devices on hard surfaces, and stop using batteries that showed signs of damage or overheating.

The presentation continued the departments’ ongoing efforts to raise fire safety awareness among younger community members and foster stronger relationships between emergency responders, schools, and families.
