Auburn, N.Y. — October 9 — The Auburn Fire Department concluded its annual Fire Prevention Week programs at five elementary schools within the Auburn Enlarged City School District. These sessions provided students with valuable information on fire safety and safe ways to charge electronic devices.
Fire Department Life Safety Educators, along with dispatchers from Cayuga County 911, visited Owasco Elementary School, William H. Seward Elementary School, Herman Avenue Elementary School, Casey Park Elementary School, and Genesee Elementary School. The sessions aimed to teach students how to identify fire hazards and make safer decisions both at home and in their neighborhoods.
This year's Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” emphasized the significance of charging electronic devices that use lithium-ion batteries safely. Students were educated on safe charging habits and methods to lower the risk of fires caused by batteries.
According to recommendations from the National Fire Protection Association, it is advised to use chargers approved by the manufacturer, place devices on flat, hard surfaces while charging, and unplug them once they are fully charged. If a device becomes excessively hot, swells, or emits strange smells, it should no longer be used.
The department noted that students were actively involved during the presentations and asked insightful questions.
Officials also expressed appreciation to the teachers, administrators, and school staff for their support in reinforcing fire safety education. These visits underscored the role of fire departments and emergency communication personnel in reducing community risks through early education and public awareness efforts.
