Norristown- On Sept. 1, the 9/11 memorial was moved from Eagleville Emergency Operations Center to Elmwood Park. The eighteen foot statue consists of two bronze hands cradling a steel I beam that was taken from the North Tower pile of the World Trade Center weighing 6500 pounds.
The sculpture was done by Sassona Nortan and has been a Montgomery County remembrance for more then two decades. The public was invited to watch the approximate seven mile move to a permanent home in the park where it could be better appreciated by the public.
The procession began at 9 a.m. with a police motorcycle escort followed by two flat bed tractor trailers and other vehicles passing under five aerial ladder flag arches. It took about an hour to reach Elmwood Park after passing through Lower Providence and West Norritan Townships. Once there, members of Local 405 Iron Workers off loaded the statue and base and then proceeded to set up the 9/11 Memorial in its new permanent location at 1325 Harding Blvd.
