Avon, NY - Firefighters from the East Avon Fire Department joined regional emergency service partners on Saturday to navigate the chaos and logistical demands of a simulated bus crash during a large-scale Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) exercise.
The multi-agency training evolution, held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, challenged first responders with the intense physical and operational friction inherent to managing dozens of simultaneous injuries. The scenario placed participating fire and emergency medical services personnel into a coordinated command structure designed to practice rapid triage, clinical stabilization, interagency communication, and patient transport prioritization under pressure.
East Avon crews were directly assigned to lead the initial tactical breaching and extrication, methodically cutting through the structural framework of the passenger bus to package and remove the first two trapped patients. Simultaneously, additional department members integrated into patient compartments within the bus wreckage, administering emergency medical care alongside regional EMS colleagues.
Adding realism to the demanding exercise, several Junior and RAM (Rescue Apparatus Member) personnel volunteered as simulated casualties, complete with dynamic symptoms and injury patterns that tested responders' patient assessment skills in real time.
Department leaders highlighted that realistic, full-scale MCI exercises are crucial for deconstructing the complexities of large disasters, ensuring personnel develop the tactical discipline and inter-agency coordination needed when catastrophic events overwhelm standard initial response protocols.
