A federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant will fund $19,573.33 for new fire hose equipment in Cortland, New York, with the money going to the Cortlandville Fire District.

The grant was one of more than $13.2 million in FEMA funds distributed to fire departments throughout Upstate New York. On September 29, 2026, the U.S. Senate announced that the Cortlandville Fire District has been awarded a $ 19,573.33 Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

The funding will cover about 2,600 feet of new hose, including 5-inch supply hose for water supply and rural water operations, as well as 2-inch and 2½-inch attack hose for firefighting. The equipment will serve to replace outdated hose and relocate some current hose into reserve stock.

As reported by WBNG based on the department’s Facebook post, local funding for the purchase will amount to less than $1,000, while the majority of the cost will be covered by a federal grant.

The Cortlandville Fire Department is located at 999 New York State Route 13 in Cortland, N.Y., and also operates a second station on Route 11. The county indicates that the department was founded in 1982.

The new hose will expand the equipment available for water supply and fire attack operations. In a 2023 feature in Fire Apparatus Magazine, it was noted that Cortlandville’s Engine 1301 is the first unit to respond from the Route 13 headquarters and is equipped with hydrant tools and hose-related gear.

The grant announcement was not connected to a specific emergency call. No first-arriving department, mutual-aid companies, emergency injuries, fire location, or incident date were identified in the available records. The September 29 date is the date of the federal funding announcement, not the date of an emergency incident.

The award was part of a larger round of federal fire-service funding administered through FEMA's Assistance to Firefighters Grant and SAFER programs. The same announcement listed the Virgil Fire Department for a separate $18,095.23 AFG award.
