Rumney Fire Department Mourned Retired Chief John Hemeon

Rumney, NH — September 4 — The Rumney Fire Department shared the news of the passing of retired Fire Chief John Hemeon, who spent 35 years serving the department and the Town of Rumney.

Hemeon worked with the department from 1965 until 2000, including 12 years as fire chief from 1988 to 2000.

Throughout his career, he was involved in responding to fires, emergencies, and other calls, while also playing a leadership role in guiding the department and its personnel.

One notable event from his time at the department happened in 1978 during a church fire.

While firefighters were inside the building, one firefighter partially fell through an attic floor. Hemeon quickly went to the firefighter's aid, pulled the member to safety, and then returned to the ongoing operation.

After retiring, Hemeon stayed active with the department.

He kept visiting the fire station and spent time talking with current members, sharing stories and exchanging ideas.

The department expressed its sympathy to Hemeon's family, friends, and former coworkers.

The Rumney Fire Department, located at 59 Depot Street, continues to offer fire protection and emergency services to the community while honoring a long-time member who served for over three decades.
