Forcible Entry Evolutions: Utica Fire Department Cadets Tackle High-Stakes Access Drills

UTICA, NY — Recruits of the Utica Fire Academy launched a new instructional block this week, focusing on the mechanical techniques, tool mastery, and communication required to rapidly force entry into secured structures during fireground emergencies.

On September 2, cadets engaged in comprehensive, hands-on forcible entry evolutions on the department training grounds. The practical sessions challenged recruits to execute both conventional and specialized breaching techniques utilizing standard fireground tool sets, including irons (halligan bar and flat-head axe), hydraulic spreaders, and cutting apparatus.

Instructors emphasized that forcible entry requires more than physical leverage; drills placed heavy focus on rapid door and lock assessment, situational size-up, clear fireground communication between paired team members, and maintaining structural integrity and control while breaching.

Department training staff underscored that gaining rapid entry is among the most decisive skills on the fireground—allowing interior attack teams to access burning structures, initiate primary searches, and secure life and property when every second counts.
