Building Fireground Fundamentals: 49th Recruit Class Advances Through Intensive Utica Drill Week

UTICA, NY — Recruits of the 49th Utica Fire Academy completed their first full week of intensive, hands-on drill ground evolutions, establishing the core technical fundamentals necessary for a career in professional firefighting.

Concluded on August 31, the rigorous training block marked the transition to daily practical skills sessions for the recruit class. Throughout the week, candidates were immersed in the critical mechanics of ground ladder operations, mastering proper carries, tactical placements, and raises for both emergency victim rescues and safe secondary entry and egress from multi-story structures.

In addition to ladder evolutions, recruits focused heavily on rapid, high-standard personal protective equipment (PPE) donning drills—reinforcing the speed, accuracy, and safety required when gearing up under operational time constraints. Daily sessions also drilled recruits on attack handline deployment, stretching lines around obstacles, and advancing charged hoselines into simulated fire environments.
