Utica Fire Department Integrates Newly Sworn Recruits Through Intensive Hands-On Drills

UTICA, NY — Newly sworn probationary firefighters with the Utica Fire Department took to the drill grounds Thursday, executing tactical engine company evolutions as part of an intensive operational onboarding curriculum.

On August 20, ten of the department’s 14 recently sworn probationary firefighters engaged in hands-on field drills focused on practical engine company proficiencies. The participating members, having previously graduated from the Utica Fire Academy or obtained their formal New York State 229 Paid Professional Firefighter Certification, are currently undergoing a targeted two-week refresher program designed to align their baseline certifications with the department's specific standard operating procedures, apparatus configurations, and frontline equipment.

Thursday's evolutions emphasized the core fundamentals of primary fire suppression, including rapid attack handline deployment, advancing charged lines through simulated structures, coordinated nozzle techniques, and team-level communications.
