Cinder Remains Part of Westford Fire Department History

Westford, Mass. — September 12 — Twenty-five years following her passing, a dedicated member of the Westford Fire Department is being honored for her contributions both within the firehouse and in the wider community. 

Cinder, a Dalmatian who served as the department’s fire dog and mascot, passed away in September 2001. On September 12, 2026, the Westford Fire Department commemorated the anniversary of her passing, honoring her as a regular fixture at the station and an integral part of the department’s history. 

According to a history of Cinder published by Westford Patch, the story of Cinder dates back to 1987, when George Fletcher, who was then Westford’s dog officer, found her as a puppy near Jack Walsh Field. She later became a well-known presence at the fire station, where she greeted visitors and joined in community events.

She participated in Westford’s annual Apple Blossom Festival parade and was also engaged in fire-safety education, conducting demonstrations to teach children about fire safety and the "stop, drop and roll" technique. 

The Westford Historical Society has also recorded Cinder’s association with the department, noting her as the fire dog at Station 1 and citing The True Story of Cinder, Westford Fire Dog, a book drawn from interviews with past and present members of the department.
