Atkinson Fire Department Remembered September 11

Atkinson, NH — September 11 — The Atkinson Fire Department honored the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks by remembering the nearly 3,000 individuals who lost their lives, including firefighters, law enforcement officers, and other emergency responders.

For those in the emergency services, September 11 holds a significant place in the history of firefighting.

The attacks led to the deaths of 343 New York City Fire Department firefighters, 23 New York City Police Department officers, and 37 New York Port Authority police officers. Many other responders later developed health problems linked to their work at the World Trade Center site.

The Atkinson Fire Department continued its commitment to protecting the community by providing fire suppression, emergency medical care, rescue efforts, and mutual aid support.

The department was founded in 1944 and has evolved from an all-volunteer group into a department that includes both career and paid-on-call staff.

The department has been based at 1 Academy Avenue in Atkinson and has continued to offer emergency services to the town.

Throughout the fire service, September 11 is remembered as a day to honor those who were lost and to emphasize the value of training, preparedness, and public service.
