Mantua Fire Responds to 100+ Storm Calls

September 1, 2026 — Mantua Township, New Jersey: Over 100 requests for emergency help were made during and after a violent rainstorm that passed through Mantua Township on Tuesday nite, bringing with it destructive straight-line winds.

Trees crashing into houses and buildings, downed lines, blocked roads, flooding, gas leaks, and utility poles and wires catching fire were among the calls. In addition to power outages and traffic closures, the National Weather Service reported that many trees and electrical lines were down in Mantua Township.

Township officials activated the Emergency Operations Center because calls were flooding in faster than local teams could handle them. In order to help offer more staffing, career firefighters were also required to return calls.

Fire coordinators in Gloucester County made arrangements for Mantua workers to receive assistance from nearby departments that had not been severely impacted by the storm. Mantua Police, Mantua Public Works, East Greenwich Township Fire & Rescue, Woolwich Fire Company, Harrison Township Fire District 23, Malaga Volunteer Fire Company, Gloucester County Emergency Management, Gloucester County EMS, and the Gloucester County Emergency Response Communications Center were among the organizations providing assistance.

The days that followed showed the scope of the storm response. By September 2, Mantua Fire had responded to 75 incidents, affecting nearly 25 roads and a quarter of the township, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Mantua Township Fire Department expressed gratitude to all the organizations who provided staff and resources to assist the community during the challenging weather event.
