Technical Extrication Readiness: Hinsdale Crews Hone Stabilization, Airbags, and Hydraulic Tools

Hinsdale, NY - Volunteer firefighters concluded an intensive, three-week vehicle extrication and stabilization training block on Tuesday, refining their technical rescue proficiencies in preparation for an upcoming full-scale scenario.

On September 8, members of the Hinsdale Volunteer Fire Department in Onondaga County gathered for the final evening of their dedicated rescue training series. The program began with foundational vehicle stabilization techniques, extensive cribbing setups, and equipment familiarization across frontline apparatus, specifically Rescue 5 and Tanker Pumper 6.

During the hands-on session, the department hosted guest instructor Mitch Goldberg from JPB Fire Sales & Services, who mentored newer members on practical extrication concepts and operational mechanics using the department's battery-operated Holmatro Combi tool.

Firefighters also conducted extensive evolutions with their standard Amkus hydraulic tool systems, rotating through three distinct sizes of hydraulic rams, specialized small and large cutters, and heavy-duty spreaders.

The evolutions spotlighted the versatile tactical payload engineered into Rescue 5. Designed under the leadership of Past Chief Robert Culkin to offset daytime staffing challenges, the multi-role apparatus functions as both a heavy rescue and an engine, carrying four sizes of lifting airbags, dual sets of lifting and stabilization jacks, extensive cribbing, and an onboard pump paired with a 300-gallon water tank for immediate fire suppression capabilities.
