Pompton Lakes Firefighters Remembered the 343 Lost on 9/11

POMPTON LAKES, NJ — September 11 — The Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire Department honored the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives during the September 11, 2001 attacks, including 343 firefighters from the New York City Fire Department who perished while responding to the World Trade Center.

For firefighters and other emergency personnel, the anniversary served as a reminder of the critical importance of training, teamwork, and being prepared.

The attacks prompted significant changes in how emergency responses are handled nationwide, with a stronger focus on communication, command structures, building information, and the safety of responders.The International Association of Fire Fighters later stated that the fire service had made substantial improvements in preparedness since 2001.

Pompton Lakes continues to operate a fully volunteer fire department, with engine, ladder, and rescue units.

The department is always on standby, providing round-the-clock service and supporting nearby communities through a countywide mutual-aid system.
