Hawthorne Fire Department Marked 25 Years Since 9/11

HAWTHORNE, NJ — September 11 — The Hawthorne community commemorated the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks with its yearly remembrance ceremony.The event was set for 6:30 p.m.at the borough's 9/11 Memorial on Goffle Road.Borough records noted that the memorial service has been held annually.
The ceremony featured a 24-foot steel beam that was recovered from the World Trade Center.
Hawthorne placed the beam at its memorial as a tribute to those who lost their lives and the emergency personnel who responded during the crisis.
On September 11, 2001, 343 firefighters from the New York Fire Department, 23 police officers from the New York Police Department, and 37 officers from the Port Authority Police Department were killed.
In total, 441 first responders from over 30 different agencies lost their lives that day.
For individuals in the emergency services field, the annual ceremony offered a chance to honor the responders who did not come back home and the civilians who were affected.
Hawthorne’s memorial remains a local site for remembering and recognizing the service of those who gave their lives.
