Mastering Vertical Ventilation: Barnegat Light Firefighters Conduct Intensive Roof Operations Drill

Barnegat Light, NJ - Firefighters climbed to the roof and fired up power saws thursday evening, conducting a specialized vertical ventilation drill designed to improve interior visibility and accelerate search-and-rescue operations during structure fires.

On September 10, the Barnegat Light Volunteer Fire Company 1 in Ocean County partnered with Wolfschmidt Fire Training, LLC, to host a comprehensive, hands-on roof operations evolution.

Operating under realistic conditions, department personnel drilled on sounding structural roof decks, identifying load-bearing points, and deploying specialized rotary and chain saws to execute precise tactical cuts. The evolution focused on the physics of vertical ventilation—cutting rapid, strategic openings directly above the fire seat to release trapped superheated toxic gases and dense smoke from the dwelling.

By establishing high-efficiency thermal chimneys to draw smoke upward and out of the structure, crews improve interior tenability and lift the smoke layer, allowing interior attack and primary search teams to rapidly sweep rooms, locate potential trapped victims, and perform life-saving rescues with greater speed and safety.
