Meriden Fire Members Marked 25 Years Since 9/11

MERIDEN, CT — September 11 — Meriden Fire Local 1148 honored the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks by remembering the firefighters, emergency personnel, and civilians who lost their lives that day, as well as those who developed illnesses in the years that followed.
The attacks resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people, including 343 firefighters from New York City.
The International Association of Fire Fighters noted that the events led to significant changes in fire service procedures, including improvements in command structures, communication systems, responder health, and safety protocols.
Long-term health issues remain a lasting part of the 9/11 legacy.
Firefighters and other emergency responders who worked at the World Trade Center were exposed to dust, smoke, and other harmful substances.The IAFF stated that these responders have continued to face health challenges such as respiratory diseases, various types of cancer, and other medical concerns.
For Meriden Fire Local 1148, the anniversary was a time to reflect on those who were lost and to reaffirm the commitment to safeguarding emergency workers through ongoing training, strong safety practices, health monitoring, and support for both responders and their families.
