Zero-Visibility Drills: Clinton and Pattenburg Firefighters Hone Life-Saving Search and Rescue Skills

Clinton, NJ - Firefighters tackled high-intensity interior fireground tactics during a joint mutual aid training session designed to push their search and suppression capabilities to the limit.

On the evening of August 31, the Clinton Fire Department teamed up with the Pattenburg Volunteer Fire Company (Station 25) for integrated evolutions in Hunterdon County. Responders combined into mixed squads from both departments to reinforce inter-agency teamwork and communication during real-world structural scenarios.

Crews rotated through demanding skill stations that covered tactical ground ladder placement, aggressive attack hoseline advancement, and specialized Vent, Enter, Search (VES) maneuvers used for rapid victim extraction. To elevate realism, instructors used theatrical smoke machines to completely black out the training structure, challenging firefighters to navigate and execute primary search and rescue under zero-visibility conditions.

The realistic drill provided vital hands-on experience under sensory deprivation, sharpening technical proficiency and strengthening the operational partnership between both Hunterdon County fire companies.
