Legacy of Leadership: Fire Chief Michael Rathjen’s Lifelong Commitment Drives Hampton Lakes Fire Service

Vincentown, NJ - Hampton Lakes Volunteer Fire Company has highlighted the service and leadership of Fire Chief Michael Rathjen as part of its member recognition, showcasing a lifelong dedication to the fire service rooted in family tradition and community commitment.


Chief Rathjen officially joined the department as a junior firefighter at the age of 16, building on a childhood spent around the firehouse and developing an early passion for firefighting. Over the years, he progressed through the ranks, becoming a certified firefighter in 2010, later serving as a lieutenant, and ultimately rising to the position of Fire Chief.


He holds numerous certifications including Firefighter I and II, Fire Officer I, Fire Instructor II, Incident Management, multiple Hazmat disciplines, and EMT certification. His training also includes specialized areas such as vehicle extrication, rope rescue, confined space, and swiftwater and ice rescue operations, reflecting a well-rounded and highly skilled fire service background.


In addition to his volunteer leadership, Rathjen serves as a career firefighter with Bordentown Township Fire District, bringing both professional and volunteer experience to his role. Prior to this, he served for approximately a decade in law enforcement before pursuing his goal of becoming a full-time firefighter.


Fire service tradition runs deep within the Rathjen family, with multiple relatives having served the department over the years, including past chiefs and long-standing members, reinforcing a strong legacy within the Hampton Lakes community.


Balancing the responsibilities of leadership with family life, Chief Rathjen continues to demonstrate dedication both at home and within the department, supported by his family as he leads operations and contributes to the continued growth and readiness of the company.
