On Saturday, the Avon and East Avon fire departments joined together to commemorate 250 years of united fire service to the community.

While the East Avon Fire Department is commemorating its 100th anniversary, the Avon Fire Department is commemorating its 150th year of operation. The collaborative community celebration was set for August 22 on Genesee Street after the Village of Avon certified the achievements.

Displays of fire apparatus, both modern and old, were part of the festivities. Community people had the opportunity to interact with firemen, take a tour of the equipment, and discover more about the tools that the departments utilize.

Children also took part in a firefighter scavenger hunt while learning about the work of local firefighters.

The community portion of the celebration concluded at the Pocket Park with remarks from local and state representatives, including Avon Mayor Rob Hayes, Supervisor Dave Lefeber, Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey, state Sen. Pam Helming and a representative from Gov. Kathy Hochul's office. The departments were presented with proclamations and citations recognizing their years of service.

Following the community event, members of both departments gathered at the East Avon Fire Department for an evening of food, dessert, yard games and fellowship.

The departments thanked the Avon Lions Club, Connie for providing ice cream, the Avon Police Department, Lima Volunteer Fire Department and Fire & Feast Catering Co. for helping with the celebration.

The milestone event recognized the history of both departments while also highlighting the members who continue to provide fire and emergency services to the Avon community.
