IRVINGTON, NY — August 4 — Firefighters from the Irvington NY Volunteer Fire Department, based at 90 Main Street, spent the evening engaging in saw and roof operations as part of their regular department training.

This hands-on experience allowed the firefighters to work with power saws and practice the skills required for roof operations.

The training also introduced new tools to the department, giving firefighters a chance to become familiar with the equipment before it might be needed during an emergency.

Roof operations can include ventilation, cutting through roofing materials, and working in areas with structural hazards.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, roof ventilation is a critical firefighter skill that requires knowledge of roof construction, ventilation hazards, tool use, ladder placement, and safe positioning.

Training materials from the Fire Safety Research Institute also highlight the importance of understanding fire dynamics and ventilation before engaging in hands-on exercises.

Ventilation changes can significantly impact fire growth and conditions inside a building, making coordination and tactical decision-making essential components of the operation.

Irvington firefighters regularly take part in department training, as required by the department’s schedule.

Additional training opportunities include water rescue, elevator rescue, officer development, and leadership courses.
