HAWTHORNE, NY — July 29 — Hawthorne firefighters participated in a realistic primary-search training exercise aimed at strengthening the skills needed when crews must locate people inside a structure fire.

The Hawthorne Fire Department, based at 25 Home Street, used a specially designed training maze that included simulated hallways, a bedroom, and a closet.

Firefighters wore full protective gear and used face pieces with reduced visibility to mimic the conditions of a smoke-filled environment.

During the exercise, crews practiced structured search patterns, staying oriented and maintaining communication while removing a rescue mannequin from the training area.

The session emphasized the basics of conducting a quick yet complete primary search while ensuring team coordination and safety.

According to New York State fire-training guidelines, primary search is a key skill for firefighters and requires crews to conduct searches in low-visibility conditions while keeping communication open, managing air supply, and maintaining team unity.

The state’s practical skills program also includes training in victim removal and detecting hidden fires as part of firefighter education.

For Hawthorne firefighters, this hands-on training provided a chance to practice search techniques in a controlled setting, without the stress of a real emergency.

The department’s training program requires new members to complete Westchester County Firefighter 1 training within their first year after being sworn in.
