The Hempstead, South Hempstead, and West Hempstead fire departments held the New York State Fire Department Championship Parade on Sunday, where members of the Oceanside Fire Department joined fire departments from throughout the state.

The event was a part of the New York State firematic competition, which took place in Hempstead over the entire weekend. The State Championship competition was held on August 15 and the NYS Championship Parade was held on August 16 in Hempstead, according to the New York State Fire Department Drill Teams calendar.

Chief Sean B. Lynch, First Assistant Chief Kevin M. Klein Sr., Second Assistant Chief Marc R. Sparberg, and Third Assistant Chief William H. Sitzman led Oceanside's group in the line of march. The department's musical accompaniment was provided by the NYPD Marching Band, according to Oceanside Fire Department.

Firefighters said one of the highlights of the day was seeing residents, fellow firefighters and supporters lining the parade route.

The department also returned home with a strong finish, earning second place in the parade. Freeport Fire Department took first place, according to the Oceanside Fire Department.
