William "Bill" Liddy, a lifelong life member of the Wellsburg Fire Department, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, at the age of 82.

According to the agency, Liddy became a member of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire agency in 1974 and attained the 50-year milestone in 2024. Along with many hours of dedication to the department and the Wellsburg community, he served as captain and assistant treasurer.

Liddy was a lifetime member and former commissioner of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department, according to his obituary. It also mentions that he was a member of the Ashland Cemetery committee, where he would be buried in private after his memorial rituals.

Liddy was born in Elmira on May 30, 1944, and spent his life in the Wellsburg area. His working career included time at Loblaws and Stroehmann Bread Company before he took over his family's Liddy's AM PM gas station and mini-mart. After retirement, he worked as a greeter at Robert's Funeral Home.

For the fire service, Liddy's career reflects the long-term commitment often found in volunteer departments. Members who remain involved for decades provide continuity, institutional knowledge and support that extend well beyond the emergency calls themselves.

His 50 years with Wellsburg also placed him among generations of firefighters who helped maintain fire protection in the small Southern Tier community. His service included both operational and administrative responsibilities, according to the department.

Liddy was also known as “Uncle Willy” by family and friends. His obituary says he enjoyed waterskiing, fishing and hunting when he was younger and remained active with his family throughout his life.
