Holderness, NH - Members of the Holderness Fire Department conducted swift water rescue training this week on the Squam River, just below the Ashland dam in Holderness, New Hampshire, working alongside Ashland Fire & Rescue in a hands-on operational exercise focused on fast-moving water environments.

Crews trained in challenging river conditions designed to simulate real-world swift water incidents, where current speed, hydraulics, and limited access can significantly increase rescue risk. Firefighters practiced key rescue techniques including shoreline operations, patient retrieval methods, and coordinated team movement in moving water scenarios.

Throughout the training, members focused on improving water safety awareness, rescue timing, and communication between shore-based and in-water personel. The exercise also provided an opportunity to evaluate equipment performance and compare operational approaches between the two departments.

The joint drill reinforced interagency coperation between Holderness and Ashland firefighters, strengthening mutual aid readiness and ensuring smoother coordination during future water rescue incidents across the region.

The department expressed appreciation to Ashland Fire & Rescue for their collaboration, noting that continued joint training enhances both operational confidence and overall regional preparedness for swift water emergencies.
