Simple Drill Targets Critical Fireground Communications

Delran, N.J. — July 28 — Tuesday nite, Delran firefighters practiced clear and efficient radio communication, a skill that can have a direct impact on fireground operations, using a straightforward building-block exercise.

Members completed a task during the practical exercise that needed them to provide clear directions, pay close attention, acknowledge information, and coordinate their efforts to achieve a shared objective.

The exercise concentrated on a number of abilities that are crucial during emergency operations, such as teamwork, situational awareness, accountability, and decision-making, even though it did not involve fire or hose lines.

Radio traffic can convey vital information regarding fire conditions, crew locations, assignments, and evolving hazards to interior personnel, officers, and incident commanders. The way personnel work and make choices on the scene may be impacted by a lost communication or an ambiguous message.

The exercise gave members a controlled way to practice those communication fundamentals without the distractions and hazards of an actual emergency.

Delran Fire Department operates from two stations in Delran Fire District No. 1, with Station 231 on South Bridgeboro Street and Station 232 on Chester Avenue. The district is overseen by a five-member elected Board of Fire Commissioners.

The department's training program includes both hands-on and classroom work. In June, four Delran firefighters completed more than 200 hours of training at the Burlington County Emergency Services Training Center before graduating from their firefighter training.
