Milford, N.J. — August 4 —In June, members of the Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit (GSURU) and water rescue workers worked through a variety of abilities through practical training.

The underwater recovery team's specialized equipment, water search strategies, and rescue methods for aware, unconscious, and stranded victims were all covered in the training. Additionally, crews rehearsed transferring injured patients from the water to a pier so they could be transferred to EMS.

Responders had the chance to practice water rescue techniques in a safe environment and go over the tools, coordination, and communication needed in a real-world situation.

GSURU is an all-volunteer water rescue and dive recovery organization based in Milford, New Jersey. The unit says it has been responding to water-related emergencies since 1960 and works with other public-safety agencies throughout New Jersey and surrounding states. Its capabilities include search and recovery, evidence recovery, ice rescue, scuba lifesaving and accident management.

GSURU also participates in regional water-rescue training. On June 20, the unit joined firefighters and rescue personnel from several agencies for a multi-agency water rescue drill on the Delaware River at the Talon boat launch. The exercise included victim-rescue scenarios and participating agencies from New Jersey and Pennsylvania
