Pitman, N.J. — August 17 — Highland Chemical Engine Company members are commemorating Lt. George Kelly, who lost his life on August 17, 1968, while working at a basement fire at Cobbins' Jewelry Store in Pitman.

Kelly responded to the reported basement fire at 39 South Broadway with the Highland Chemical Engine Company. Kelly and three other firefighters were trapped in the basement when the floor collapsed during firefighting operations. After being taken out of the structure, Kelly passed away from his wounds.

Kelly was thirty-two. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation states that his wife, Barbara, and three children survived him.

For members of the Highland Chemical Engine Company and the larger Pitman fire department, Kelly's death anniversary continues to be significant. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Roll of Honor features his name.

Members of VFW Post 6469 and the Highland Chemical Engine Company will hang a memorial banner on Pitman's First Avenue at noon on August 23 as part of this year's observance. The purpose of the gathering is to pay tribute to Kelly and ensure that the community remembers his sacrifice and service.

The 1968 tragedy also serves as a reminder to modern firefighters of the risks involved in interior operations and structural instability, especially when flooring or other building components have been compromised by fire.
