Atlantic Beach, N.Y. — August 2 — Rescue crews handled two separate water emergencies Sunday, with the first involving a jet skier who became partially submerged near the Atlantic Beach Bridge and the second involving a vessel on the rocks in Jones Inlet.
The first call brought Atlantic Beach Rescue, Lawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department, Inwood Fire Department and the Long Beach Fire Department to the Atlantic Beach Bridge after a report of a jet ski that was partially submerged with its operator holding onto the bridge.
Atlantic Beach Rescue EMT Leo Esses spotted the incident and reported it to dispatch. The vessel August High also reported that its crew was attempting to assist the jet skier.
Atlantic Beach Rescue deployed a jet ski with a crew of two rescue swimmers. The swimmers reached the operator and brought him aboard August High, which then transported him back to the dock. The rescue was completed without further incident, according to Atlantic Beach Rescue.
Another marine emergency was reported in Jones Inlet as the first operation was coming to an end. The Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department received mutual aid from Atlantic Beach Rescue's Jet Ski 363 and drone team in response to a vessel that had fallen onto the rocks.
While responders devised a strategy to deal with the vessel through a private salvage operation, the drone team conducted airborne reconnaissance.
Different marine resources, such as rescue swimsuits, a rescue watercraft, and an unmanned aircraft, were needed for the two instances. Several nearby fire and rescue organizations operating in the same coastal region participated in the reaction as well.
