East Marion, N.Y. — August 10 — Members of the East Marion Fire Department are remembering longtime volunteer Michael F. Griffin, an honorary member, former Rescue Squad captain and former department commissioner who died August 8 at age 79.
Griffin spent many years serving the community as an EMT and was a longtime member of the East Marion Fire Department. His service included leadership as captain of the department's EMT squad.
Before moving to honorary status, Griffin also played a role in the department's ambulance operations. The East Marion Fire Department said he was instrumental in designing its latest ambulance, reflecting his continued involvement with the Rescue Squad.
Griffin's emergency-service work was part of a broader record of community service. The Suffolk Times reported that he also volunteered as a public representative for the Plum Island Animal Disease Center and was involved with St. Agnes Church, including its faith-formation program and John's Place, which provides meals and shelter to people in need.
After a protracted illness, Griffin passed away. According to his obituary, he underwent a 34-year cadaveric kidney transplant and was still dedicated to giving back to the community.
On Thursday, August 13, from 3 to 7 p.m., family and friends gathered at Greenport's Horton-Mathie Funeral Home. On Friday, August 14, at 10 a.m., a funeral Mass was planned at Greenport's St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church. The deceased would thereafter be buried at Farmingdale's St. Charles Cemetery.
Griffin's years of devotion to the Rescue Squad and the East Marion community were honored by the East Marion Fire Department.
He made a lasting impact on the department and the people it serves through his efforts as an EMT, officer, and volunteer.
