Commack, N.Y. — August 8 — Members of the Commack Fire Department gathered Friday to honor and remember Honorary Chief Alan B. Groveman, marking one year since his death.

Groveman died on August 8, 2025, at age 74. His service to the Commack community included a long career with the fire department as well as leadership with the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Records from the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps list Groveman among its former chiefs, with terms as chief in 2016–2017 and again from 2021–2022.

Beyond the firehouse, Groveman was involved in emergency services. He characterized himself as a lifelong member of the Commack Fire Department, having held positions as a junior chief with the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps and as a captain and rescue commander during a 2010 Suffolk County legislative hearing.

Additionally, he participated in emergency services and fire service groups at the county level. Groveman is listed in Suffolk County records as a member of the Suffolk County Vocational Education and Extension Board, which provides training for volunteer firefighters in the county.

Groveman, who was then on the county's Vocational Education and Extension Board, was cited by the Suffolk County administration in 2014 when he talked about the significance of giving volunteer firefighters ongoing training.

The Commack Fire Department's August 8 remembrance described Groveman's service and impact on the community and stated that he would not be forgotten.

The gathering gave current members an opportunity to remember a former officer and colleague whose emergency-service career included both fire and EMS leadership.

There was no emergency response or mutual-aid operation associated with the gathering. It was a department remembrance honoring Groveman and his years of service.

Groveman's obituary requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Firefighter Cancer Awareness Mentoring of New York State, with donations directed through the Commack Fire Department.
