Bohemia, N.Y. — August 6 — The Junior Firefighter Program is being revived by a Long Island fire department, providing local youth with a chance to learn about the fire service while honing their leadership, collaboration, and community service abilities.

The program for boys and girls aged 14 to 17 has returned, according to the Bohemia Fire Department. The program's goal is to provide young people with a supervised training setting while introducing them to the principles of the fire service.

Junior firefighters will be trained in fire hose operations, ladders and tools, knots and ropes, fire behavior fundamentals, first aid and CPR, collaboration and leadership, and community service, according to the department's recruitment flier.

Throughout the academic year, the program will meet twice a month, and a demonstration for family and friends at the conclusion of the year is planned. Additionally, the department says that prior experience is not necessary.

The program is a component of a larger youth-development initiative that is present throughout the volunteer fire department in New York. Junior, Explorer, and other youth programs, according to FASNY, give young people the chance to learn about the fire service, gain real-world experience, and get involved in their communities. The Bohemia Fire Department is located at 950 Pearl Street in Bohemia, according to FASNY's statewide youth program directory.

The department's flyer describes the program as an opportunity to build skills, confidence and character while making new friends and learning about emergency service.

Young people interested in joining can contact the Bohemia Fire Department at join@bohemiafd.com or visit the firehouse for more information, according to the department's August 6 announcement.
