Flushing, N.Y. — August 16 — Families of fallen FDNY members gathered at Citi Field on Sunday for a special day hosted by the FDNY Honor Legion, bringing families together for baseball and time with others who share a connection to the New York City fire service.
The Honor Legion welcomed families of FDNY members who died while serving the department. The organization has a long-standing mission of assisting the families of fallen firefighters and providing social gatherings that help maintain a connection among members and their families.
The outing included a New York Mets game at Citi Field. The Mets faced the Washington Nationals and finished the afternoon with a 4-3 victory, giving the families an extra reason to celebrate. MLB records show the game was played Sunday, August 16, with the Mets scoring three runs in the fourth inning and another in the fifth before holding on for the win.
In 1983, the FDNY Honor Legion became an official fraternal organization. Supporting firefighters and helping the families of those who lost their lives while working for the department are part of its goal.
Over the years, the organization has hosted additional family events, such as a 2014 brunch at the New York City Fire Museum and a ride on the 343 Fireboat for the families of departed comrades. Additionally, its photo collection records past occasions that brought Honor Legion soldiers and their families together.
Families had the chance to spend time together away from the firehouse and honor the members who are still a part of the FDNY family at the August 16 meeting, which carried on that tradition in a different environment. And this time, the home team helped make the day even better with a 4-3 Mets win.
