For members of FDNY Engine Company 292 and Ladder Company 136, a July 18, 2026 response in Woodside, Queens, New York, demonstrated how quickly a routine assignment can develop into an unconventional technical rescue.
At approximately 12:30 p.m., Engine 292 responded to 47-04 69th Street for a family trapped by rapidly rising water in a basement. First-arriving members encountered waist-high water rushing into the lower level, where four occupants were unable to escape because water pressure and debris had blocked their exit.
Engine 292 members split into two teams, with one attempting to reach the family through the basement while another searched for an alternate access point. The second team entered from above and encountered an interior stairway blocked by construction. Members forced through the obstruction and another door before reaching the trapped occupants.
Once the family was moved into the backyard, Ladder 136 members completed the final portion of the operation. With the normal exit inaccessible, truck members positioned a portable ladder at a fence and assisted all four residents across to safety. No injuries were reported.
The operation highlighted the adaptability expected of FDNY companies working beyond traditional fire suppression. Faced with moving water, blocked access and an unconventional removal route, Engine 292 and Ladder 136 combined engine and truck company resources to solve the problem and remove all four occupants safely.
