At the end of the Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association ceremony, Chief Steve Montie has been honored with the 2024 Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association (CCVFA) Lifetime Firefighter Achievement Award. This esteemed accolade recognizes Montie's extraordinary dedication and leadership within the fire service.
Chief Montie embarked on his firefighting career at the age of 18 in 1983 with the Stuyvesant Volunteer Fire Company No. 1. His unwavering commitment to the department and the Columbia County community has been evident throughout his long tenure. Rising through the ranks, Montie’s service to the Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association (CCVFA) included roles as Director in 2006 and President from 2015.
Despite his considerable contributions, Chief Montie has often shunned the spotlight. When the Stuyvesant Fire Company nominated him for this prestigious award, he expressed his preference for remaining unrecognized. However, the committee was unanimous in its decision to honor his achievements. To maintain the element of surprise, the committee orchestrated a discreet operation, staging meetings and involving county leaders to keep the recognition a secret.
Over his 41 years of service, Chief Montie has demonstrated exceptional dedication and leadership, not only through his role in the fire service but also by instilling these values in his family and fellow firefighters. His influence extends beyond the firehouse; he has been a mentor, father, and guiding force within the Columbia County community.
Chief Montie’s extensive list of accomplishments and contributions reflects a lifetime of commitment and selflessness. The Columbia County Volunteer Firefighters Association and the committee express their deep appreciation and congratulations to Chief Steve Montie. His remarkable service and dedication have significantly impacted the fire service in Columbia County, making him a most deserving recipient of the Lifetime Firefighter Achievement Award.
