Vehicle Rescue Training Focuses on Safety and Patient Care

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Using cars donated by DC Towing & Recovery, Hancock Volunteer Fire Department personnel finished a two-day auto extrication training program on June 7.

According to officials, the training was spread out over two days in order to provide as many firemen with practical experience as feasible. During simulated rescue scenarios, members practiced dash lifts, door and roof removal, hazard awareness, scene size-up, patient evaluation and safety, and the deployment of lifting air bags. During complex vehicle rescues, the exercises focused on patient protection, firefighter safety, and innovative problem-solving.

Although significant extrication accidents are relatively rare, department chiefs pointed out that frequent training guarantees firemen stay adept with specialized rescue equipment and tactics.
