The Taunton Fire Department is grieving the tragic death of former firefighter Martin "Marty" Smith III.

Smith was raised in Jamaica Plain after being born in Boston, according to officials. He served in the Vietnam War and was awarded multiple medals, honors, and two Purple Hearts by the US Army. Later, at the age of 50, he joined the Taunton Fire Department, where he continued to serve the city until his retirement in January 2013.

Members of the department recalled Smith's commitment to the fire service and the military. In Stoughton and Canton, funeral services were planned for June 1st and June 2nd.

As they commemorate Smith's life and service legacy, officials sent their condolences to his friends, family, and fellow firefighters.
