First-grade students from Orange Elementary School were invited to the fire station for a fire safety field trip during the final week of May 2026, carrying on a tradition that dates back more than 60 years.

According to officials, children were taught how to contact 911, utilize the town's fire alarm boxes in an emergency, avoid campfires, wear protective gear, and use the tools that firefighters use. Smokey Bear also made a special appearance during the visit.

Teachers, staff from the District 9 Department of Conservation and Recreation, and firefighters who made the event possible were praised by department leaders.
