Sebring Firefighters, County Medics Honored for Saving Cardiac Arrest Patient

At the City of Sebring meeting on May 19, Mayor John Shoop read a proclamation declaring the week as EMS Appreciation Week, honoring the emergency medical personnel who provide everyday assistance to the city. After the declaration, Captain/Paramedic Rivera, Senior Engineer Waldron, Firefighter/EMT Cruz, Firefighter/Paramedic Sorensen, and Firefighter/EMT Bobo of Highlands County Fire Rescue were given the Chief's Award by Assistant Chief Austin Maddox of the Sebring Fire Department.

Their heroics on a cardiac arrest call at a nearby restaurant on May 7 were acknowledged with the prize. When Waldron and Cruz arrived, they evaluated the patient, started CPR and ventilation, and administered a life-saving AED shock. Prior to the patient being taken to a nearby hospital, advanced life support procedures were put in place after Rescue 10 and Captain Rivera arrived. On May 12, the patient was discharged. Rapid response, teamwork, training, life-saving gear, and ongoing support from city officials and the community—whose investments in public safety enable such rescues—were all hailed by department officials for the successful conclusion.
