WEST PAWLET, Vt. — May 12th — As part of regular water supply and equipment preparedness activities, West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department members spent the evening testing dry hydrants around the district. The department's firefighters at 2806 VT Route 153 examined hydrants to make sure they were operational and capable of meeting emergency water supply requirements. When municipal hydrants are not available, dry hydrants are crucial to rural firefighting operations because they enable equipment to draw water from ponds and other adjacent sources.
According to department officials, routine testing enhances reaction preparedness for crises such as structural fires and aids in the early detection of maintenance problems by crews. In order to ensure safe and efficient fireground operations, routine hydrant inspections are also advised by national fire service guidelines.
