The City of New York Fire Department cautioned citizens on April 25th of the risks that hoarding and clutter can pose inside houses during emergencies.
According to officials, obstructed stairways, corridors, and entrances can make it more difficult for firemen and emergency medical services to swiftly reach residences during emergencies and delay escape during a fire. To increase occupant and first responder safety, the department asked residents to maintain all exits and walkways free of clutter and storage.
Additionally, the FDNY advised locals to report dangerous clutter or hoarding circumstances by calling 311.
