WEST HAVEN, CT — May 14th — Before graduation weekend, Captain Jacob Urban was acknowledged by the West Haven Fire Department as a member of the Class of 2026. Through a collaboration between the University of New Haven and West Haven City Hall, Urban, an EMT and training captain with the department, became the first first responder in West Haven to receive a tuition-free degree.

Urban went to the campus with Danny, the department's comfort and support dog, to take pictures with Dorinda Borer and Jens Frederiksen as part of the festivities. According to department representatives, the program helps city first responders continue their education and strengthen their leadership skills.
