SMITHVILLE, N.Y. — May 4th — In commemoration of International Firefighters' Day and the contribution that volunteer firefighters bring to their communities, Smithville Volunteer Fire Department members joined stations nationwide. The commitment of firemen who react to weather-related incidents, automobile accidents, medical calls, and structural fires all year round was recognized by department leaders.

Volunteer firemen sometimes juggle job, family obligations, emergency response duties, and continuing education requirements. Every year on May 4th, International Firefighters' Day is celebrated to honor firefighters for their dedication to emergency response and public safety. Residents were urged by officials to express gratitude to local firemen and acknowledge the vital role volunteer departments continue to play in safeguarding communities throughout New York.
