Firefighters Turn Soon-to-Be-Demolished Building Into Real-World Training Ground

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Thomaston, ME - Crews from Thomaston Fire & EMS, the Owls Head Fire Department, and South Thomaston Emergency Services took advantage of a rare hands-on training opportunity inside a building scheduled for demolition, using the structure to sharpen critical fireground skills in realistic conditions.

Firefighters trained extensively on forcible entry techniques, VEIS (Vent, Enter, Isolate, Search) operations, and vertical ventilation tactics — all essential components of aggressive interior firefighting and victim rescue.

The realistic environment allowed crews to build confidence, improve coordination, and practice under conditions difficult to replicate during standard drills.

With only a short time remaining before the structure is torn down, departments made every effort to maximize the opportunity and reinforce operational readiness.

Officials praised the dedication and teamwork shown by all participating members, emphasizing the importance of continuous training to ensure firefighters are prepared when real emergencies occur.
