On March 17th, the Shelburne Fire Department responded to a report from the Shelburne Water Department of a raccoon with a peanut butter container jammed over its head.
Firefighters found the animal about 25 feet up in a tree. Crews used a ground ladder and a snare to carefully remove the container, restoring the raccoon's vision and allowing it to stay in the tree.
There were no injuries recorded during the incident. The raccoon remained on the tree for a brief period of time before going on once the container was removed. Officials urged households to properly dispose of food containers and secure trash to keep wildlife from becoming caught or hurt.
While the call was not a normal emergency response, firemen pointed out that departments are frequently called to assist with a variety of circumstances throughout the city.
