This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

Harrisville, RI — March 2nd — As part of their continuous winter readiness, Harrisville Fire Department firefighters participated in ice rescue training. Crews went over how to handle situations where people fall through frozen lakes or ponds. Firefighters noted that the local ice conditions are still thick throughout the training. However, officials pointed out that late in the season, when temperatures change, ice can swiftly deteriorate. Frozen surfaces can become unexpected due to changing circumstances, particularly as warmer weather approaches.

In order to safely reach victims while working on unstable ice, ice rescue operations frequently require the use of specialized suits, ropes, and tether systems. Every winter, departments all around the region carry out similar exercises. As weather conditions continue to shift, the Harrisville Fire Department advised locals to exercise caution when near frozen water.
