Somers Fire Department Issues Spring Fire Safety Reminder

This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

As spring yard work begins around the neighborhood, the Somers Fire Department urges residents to take precautions to limit the risk of brush and outdoor fires. Warmer temperatures, dry leaves, and seasonal winds can all contribute to the rapid spread of fire.

Fire officials advise keeping lawn mower decks and other outdoor equipment free of dry grass and debris that can ignite due to heat or sparks. Equipment with hot exhausts, such as leaf blowers and chainsaws, should not be used on dried leaves or brush.

Residents planning to burn brush should obtain a valid burn permit and follow all local regulations. Outdoor fires should never be left unattended. Ashes from grills, fire pits, and wood stoves should be placed in a metal container with a lid and stored away from structures and other combustible materials.

Officials also advise checking the Connecticut Forest Fire Danger Report and watching for any local burn bans before starting outdoor fires.
