March 21, 2026 — The Freetown Fire Department is reminding residents that open burning is permitted from January 15 through May 1, but only with a valid permit and strict adherence to state and local safety regulations. Officials emphasized that permits must be applied for in advance and activated daily beginning at 8:00 AM, with no permits issued after 2:00 PM. Approved burning hours are between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, and all fires must be completely extinguished by the end of the day. Permits are limited to the burning of natural materials such as brush, branches, cane, driftwood, and forest debris, while the burning of leaves, grass, construction materials, or accelerants such as gasoline is strictly prohibited. Safety guidelines require that fires be located at least 75 feet from structures, constantly attended, and properly controlled with water or tools readily available. Fire officials also noted that burning may be restricted or revoked at any time based on conditions, and all permits must be available for inspection. Residents are encouraged to follow all regulations to prevent accidental fires and ensure community safety during the open burning season.
