This article is a direct street report from our correspondent and has not been edited by the 1st Responder newsroom.

The Derby Fire Department had its monthly department practice on March 20th, with a focus on train firefighting safety. Members of the Ansonia Fire Department also participated in the training, which was conducted by Metro-North Fire Chief Sweeting in collaboration with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Office of System Safety.

With active rail lines running through Derby and Ansonia, the training addressed the threats that firefighters may encounter when working near railroad tracks. The session discussed reaction concerns, collaboration with railroad workers, and safety protocols for rail infrastructure emergencies.

Officials also reminded the public to never halt on railroad tracks, to follow activated warning equipment such as lights and bells, and to leave the tracks as soon as signals activate. Pedestrians are likewise encouraged to avoid walking on or near railroad rails.
